In this first episode, programme manager @sanlifaez speaks with Dr @alexrushforth, a scholar in the sociology of science and science policy. His research focuses on research evaluation, bibliometrics, science governance and science and technology studies.

Alex recently wrote a critical commentary on the Netherlands’ Recognition & Rewards programme. He argues that: “The initiative has been largely effective in mobilising formal organisational support from key stakeholders in Dutch research, but significant vulnerabilities remain — particularly regarding uncertain buy-in and implementation by rank-and-file academics, the ultimate implementers of the envisioned changes.”

A valuable take away from the conversation are the recommendations that Alex shares with listeners in the last quarter of the podcast. A preview: are you willing to contribute to the reform of the scientific assessment structure? If so, do the following: bring the content and necessity of the story to your own discipline, discuss it with colleagues in your field. Also, see if there is room for discussion about reforms at conferences. Is there a stand available for alternative publication options?
