Q&A Recognition & Rewards

It takes effort for academic teaching to be the equal to academic research. For some fields, there is a temptation to give prize-winning and pioneering research a place on a podium and leave teaching in the shadows.

Teaching is an equal core task to research, within the university. To underline this, several institutions are developing development opportunities with education as an emphasis within their Recognition and Rewards programme. See for instance the career diversification of the University of Groningen and, by way of illustration this interview with UHD Steffen Eriksen, or this “handreiking career path with emphasis on education” of TU Delft and this professorial promotion at the University of Humanistics. There is also a growing focus on development paths for lecturers.

In addition, Ruth Graham's Career Framework for University Teaching plays a major role in (re)formulating a healthy position for recognising and rewarding teaching in Dutch Academia. Moreover, Ruth Graham includes developments in the Netherlands in her Teaching Culture Survey (read the report here).
